Buying The Car

Doc (a friend from Michigan) trailered the car from the original owner’s home to Hemi-Tyme (a mutual friend in Arkansas) where I picked up to bring home.

I bought this low mileage 1960 Plymouth sight-unseen from the original owner in Missouri, in a believe 2003. He claimed that is was low-mileage and never driven in Winters. Detailed photos I had him send of brake pedal pad, trunk floor and the underside made me want to believe him.

I drove up to my bud’s shop in Conway, AR and was waiting when our mutual bud from Michigan arrived with the car. We rolled it off his open trailer and I was quite pleased when inspecting the car. In the glovebox was a raggedy old log book with every purchase made for the car – starting with purchasing the car in 1959 and ending with last gas purchased earlier in the month. It ha columns for date, mileage, description and amount paid. This log substantiated the claims of low mileage and not driven in winters.

My son and I had driven the 540 miles from Texas with my dually and enclosed trailer, but I decided that I wanted to drive home – despite the 25 year old El cheapo tires – and the rain moving in. We found an old license plate to put on and rigged a switch to make the turn signals work.

So drove the car home, at one time hitting 100 mph – to prove the old girl could do it.

I actually had it slightly over 100 but when I was trying to also fumble focusing my iPhone on getting a photo, I couldn’t also focus on sustaining 100. The old girl deaccelerated faster than accelerated.

Once home, I took the detail photos above. As you can see the difference in colors under hood vs exterior – it would appear it had visited Earl Shieb at one time or another.
