NMCA posted the Championship Points ranking for NSS — after the Atlanta Race. Dallas Schultz, Doug Poskevitch and Kurt Neighbor are all within one round of each other, while Doug Duell is just outside one round. Dave Schultz being pushed back in the first round of Eliminations at Atlanta is a distant 5th — almost three rounds back. The next race is Maryland June 8-10.

April 12-15-2012 Atlanta Dragway, Commerce, GA

At the Florida race, the motor home's inverter crapped out and it took a lot of money, begging, and legwork to get it finished in time to load up the cars in time for the Atlanta race.

Big Red Ram isn't quite ready yet, so we bought the tired black Coronet (couple hundred passes on the motor) for Dallas and the Texas Whale for me. We left at 9:15AM on Wednesday the 11th and arrived at the track at 2:30am Thursday. In the morning I started the generator and it shut off 5 minutes later giving an error code 36. Whipped out the manual and it said it was a fuel issue. We knew it wasn't a filter as we change the filters after every race (the generator has 4200 hours on it), so we replaced the fuel pump with a spare we had. That didn't work so we spent hours trying new grounds and other tests/fixes — then resigned ourselves that the $695 control board is shot. Called Cummins, and they laughed about coming to the track to repair — and that maybe they could fit us in this week. We resigned ourselves that it was another week in the dark, and without heat and AC. Thursday night it got to 37 outside and 42 in the motor home. Anyway — we just sucked it up and worked through it, with the help of Doug Duell powering the chargers for the cars' batteries and allowing me to put the coffee maker in his trailer.

Friday we were suppose to have two time trials and two qualifying passes. The track got way behind with accidents, oil downs and a couple of True Street cars hosing down the track with Antifreeze. We got in a pair of Time Trials. My car ran 9.61 and 9.63 — so it looked like the 9.50 index was out and that I'd have to slow down to the 9.75 index. Dallas was pretty close to the 9.75 index with his car. There were 16 NSS cars. In the first round of qualifying Dallas did a 9.756 and was Top Qualifier. I completely screwed up the launch and was off 1/10 on the 60' — doing a 9.800. That was all she wrote for Friday.

Saturday we were suppose to do the last qualifying and at least one elimination. However they were so far behind from Friday that we instead were scheduled for the last two Qualifying passes. Everything went so smooth with the track that they gave us a bonus 4th. I managed a 9.760 — which got me 5th. Dallas didn't improve his 9.756 and was 2nd or third. However my car was spraying oil badly under the hood since the first run of the morning. Most of it was coming from the timing cover — which had the electric water pump and elephant ears ahead of it. We'd tighten the cover bolts after every round and permatexted the seams — but high RPMs would start to blow the oil again.

Sunday I had someone that wasn't close to running his number. However, one drop of oil was seen after my light burnout and another spotted hanging when they looked under to see if it was me. I was backed out, and my competitor was 3/10 too slow. ARRRRRGH! Dallas one against Bud Cochran — who also ran a c/fx car. The cars were al slow Sunday — so everyone was pulling out whatever they could. Dallas was able to remove the passenger seat and a few other pounds here and there. In the next round Dallas took out Doug Poskevitch — who was the points leader. That helped a lot of us. In the Semis Dallas lost when Kurt Neighbor had a better RT.

My mental calculations has Dallas in first with Doug Duell, Kurt Neighbor, and Doug Poskevitch within 50 points. I should be a couple 100 behind in 5th.

In general and in response to information received, the intent of The National Muscle Car Association and The Nostalgia Super Stock National Association – because we both supervise a nostalgia class which competes in an open context – is to absolutely prohibit the use of any device which makes available current vehicle performance information and immediate non-driver response and control capabilities in any form, including several present technologies available.

These various technologies did not exist during and are a contradiction of the time period we represent, and also burdens any participant not using them with a competitive disadvantage.

Therefore, beginning at the Atlanta 2012 NMCA event, the ignition boxes and any other vehicle control or potential vehicle control device(s) of all NSS vehicles will be inspected, identified and documented for the archives of both organizations.

NMCA Bradenton 2012 – March 14-18

For this race I ran my 60 Plymouth 2-door wagon, and Dallas ran the black 65 Coronet. The wagon had a fresh 588ci Diamondback Engines Wedge and a transmission recently rebuilt by Dallas. It also has a new ATI Tree-Master 8" torque converter. Although Dallas had made two soft passes in the car to make sure it was race ready, Bradenton was going to be my first passes, and the first hard passes with the new engine. The black Coronet has a "Well Seasoned" 580ci motor in it, and recently had its 4-link completely replaced. We had hoped the Big Red Ram would be ready for Dallas by Bradenton, but it should be ready for Commerce.

We left Wednesday morning and drove as far as Lake City, FL., where we hooked up with our pit bud Doug Duell at the Wal-Mart there at 2AM. On the road at 9AM Thursday and at the track to set up pits at 2PM. A little track "Trials and Tribulation" with Doug getting his rig stuck in the sandy pits, and the generator crapping out on my motorhome and trailer. Doug was out within an hour, but we spent the week without electricity except for a cord to Doug to alternate the 16V charges for the cars, and a cord to my bedroom to power my CPAP at night. We charged the phones and iPad in Doug's trailer.

We did get one chance to make one TT pass on Thursday. I ran a 9.60 shifting at 7000, and decided to focus on the 9.75 index. Bad choice as the engine started to come in and get faster for the next few passes — to where I ultimately had to bolt 100 pounds on the car, 80 pounds loose in the box, and short shift at 6400 to get my 9.75. I should have selected the 9.5 index.

Doug and I had a wager for a $1 per pass for the best reaction time. I won the first three, and he won the next three. My next pass after he left the track was a .006 in the 2nd round.

We had two Time Trials on Friday morning and then the first round qualify at about 3PM. The below video is the Nostalgia Super Stock 1st round of Qualifying.

Saturday we had two more rounds of qualifying, and I was the top qualifier with a 9.761 on a 9.75 index. Dallas was #4 with a 9.77. 12 cars came to the event (way down — most likely because of the cost of diesel, lack of popularity of the sandy track with NSS guys, and the last race being a double-points so the other races don't count near as much), but 2 broke and only 10 qualified. My #1 drew me Doug Duell #6 and Dallas got the #9 guy — with a 64 Plymouth and who is new to the sport.

Eliminations started at 10AM Sunday. Doug and I played heads games with each other at the top end, and I got the win light. Dallas won against the 64. I got a Bye in the second round and had a .006 light and a 9.71 — which was where I wanted to be as it was getting hotter.

Dallas had a 442 and won that round, and then got a Bye to the Finals. I got the winner of Neighbor and Poskevitch — which was Poskevitch. I ran a 9.76 but lit up the stupid bulb. I guess I still have a hard time waiting for the 12-second cars. Screwed up and All Schultz Final.

Dallas and Poskevitch had a close race in the finals — neither knowing who won until they got their slips.

Dallas lot by .0023 seconds in a Hell of a race.

At 6PM we collected our Runner Up and Semi $$$, loaded up, and drove the 1177 miles back to Richmond, Texas — get here 1:30PM Monday.

Live From Brandenton Thread

Dallas and I will be leaving in the morning to our first NSS race of the year – Bradenton, FL. We should arrive to set up our pits Thursday afternoon.

Time Trials on Friday, Qualifying on Saturday, and eliminations on Sunday. Should be back Monday night or Tuesday if there are no rain delay hold-overs.

The link at the top of the page goes to the “Live at Bradenton” thread at NSS-Racing. Here is where those with Internet access post updates, and images of time slips, qualifying ladder, and eliminations.

There will also be a link there where you can follow the runs of the NSS class or individual drivers real time. Dallas’ number is 7602 and mine is 7601.

Katy/Richmond Texas Area

A race shop in the Richmond/Katy Texas area is in need of a shop Rat for part time employment. Primary duties are to keep the shop clean, and secondary duties include cleaning race cars and trucks, and light maintenance.

There is a lot of opportunity to learn how to work on these cars as experience progresses. Opportunity to turn into a full time position. Starts with 5-hour work days Monday through Friday for $7.25hr. Wage, hours, and duties progress at the rate of the ability of the employee demonstrates. I might consider making this a 3-hour after school job for a local high school Senior looking for employment after high school. Would also consider the right (physically able) retiree looking for a little extra income to supplement his Social Security. Racing experience or CDL a plus — but not a requirement.

This is a perfect position for an honest, dependable and hard working person who would like to work in a race shop and on drag racing cars. We treat this as a serious position and have a low tolerance for being late, missing work, or goofing off.

Drivers can go to http://www.nssracing.com/media-guide/ to answer a few simple questions in less than five minutes, and optionally attach a digital photo of their car. Their page is then added to the next build of the 2012 Media Guide.

The media guide is a PDF file (free Adobe Reader, present on most computers is needed to read) that can be printed and handed to the track announcer, or he can have it opened on his computer/tablet. The pages are in Driver Number order, and can quickly give the announcer the proper facts on both car and driver.

We are asking for all drivers to list all NSS cars (this really is easy and can be completed in less than 5 minutes) they might find themselves driving in 2012, and for all event promoters to give the guide to their track announcer.

The guide will be updated at least once a week, as new drivers and cars are submitted. A confirmation will be emailed to you once you submit. Please add your car today.
